Refillable Mug Changes at WDW Might Be Coming!

Disney's Rapid Fill

Last weekend we took a long weekend and headed to our favorite place on Earth! You Guessed it Orlando! I did some research and photos while Steve took the kids to Blizzard Beach (look for a blog soon!). He mentioned something to me that might be coming true at the resorts at Disney World sooner rather than later.

In my weekly reading of all things Disney I ran across an article about Disney's Rapid Fill coming to the resorts. What does that mean? When you are at the water parks you can purchase a refillable mug for a set price. It has a bar code on it that you have to scan each time you refill before the machine allows you to refill your mug. This cuts down on guests bringing their mugs from 1992, which irritate me to death!! But I digress!

Apparently plans may be in motion for this system to be installed at all of the resorts on Disney property. All Star Sports Resort has
been the test resort and it must be working well for Disney! Taking away the opportunity for entire family's to bring their mugs from
their visit 5 years ago and cheating the system. So be mindful before you pack those mugs with the intention of getting free soft drinks that Disney may be one step ahead of you ;)

The New & Improved TEST TRACK

Epcot Guests Design Their Dream Wheels, then Buckle Up for Fun at the Re-Imagined Test Track Presented by Chevrolet

Copyright: Disney - by Matt Stroshane
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – Walt Disney World Resort guests will enter the world of automotive design as never before, creating their own virtual concept, then boarding a “SimCar” ride vehicle to race through a thrilling series of performance tests when the re-imagined, multi-sensory Test Track Presented by Chevrolet grand opens Dec. 6, 2012.
The iconic Epcot attraction, a new collaboration between Chevrolet Design and the creative team of Walt Disney Imagineering, celebrates how meticulous design not only shapes the look of Chevrolet cars, trucks and crossovers, but drives their performance on the open road.

For inspiration for the project, Walt Disney Imagineers made numerous visits to Detroit, collaborating with Chevrolet designers and touring the inner sanctums of Chevrolet’s design studios.

Amid upbeat music, eye-popping lighting effects and a collection of Chevrolet concept and new vehicles, guests themselves become automotive designers – and peer into the future of personal transportation in the process.

Test Track guests enter an all-new, interactive pre-show area with a future-focused design theme – from the fully realized Chevrolet Miray roadster concept car and the Chevrolet EN-V to dynamic media displays including models and sketches of vehicle design possibilities. The sleek new “Chevrolet Design Center” invites guests to create their own virtual custom-concept vehicle.
Car designer wannabes get to shape their own virtual car, truck or crossover and learn how their choices perform against four important performance attributes that guide Chevrolet designers:
  • Capability – design your car to handle the roughest roads or most extreme weather conditions
  • Efficiency – create a car that saves on fuel, reduces your environmental footprint, cuts down on emissions or even uses recycled parts
  • Responsiveness – choose elements that will give you easy maneuverability through the tightest of turns
  • Power – choose the gear you need to make your car a racer or a hauler
At design kiosks, rows of touch screens become canvasses for guests to try their hand at automotive design. They can design alone or collaborate on their design with family and friends. Even choose from six different languages.

Here, they can virtual-draw – stretch and shape their vehicle design by length, width, height and engine size — and decide which performance attribute is most important to them. Once they create – from infinite possibilities — the design of their dreams, guests complete their creation with even more choices. They can make a design statement with an expressive front grill, tailored wheels of various sizes and styles, and custom paint with graphics and other vehicle accessories. And the crowning touch of every design – Chevrolet’s world-famous bowtie logo.
Even FASTPASS and single rider guests can choose the performance attribute most important to them and select their virtual car’s profile from a selection of pre-designed vehicles.

Copyright: Disney - by Ali Nasser
Their virtual custom-concept Chevrolet vehicle complete, the adventure then shifts into high gear as guests – armed with a card encoded with their personal specs that allows their design to ride with them and see how it performs – board their 6-person “SimCar” ride vehicle. Ahead: a thrilling journey into a dazzling multi-sensory, optically charged experience as guests put their personal design through a series of performance tests – the exhilarating heart of Test Track Presented by Chevrolet.

Along their route, riders experience changing terrain and extreme conditions as their designs are scored at checkpoints for Capability, Efficiency, Responsiveness and Power. How does their design stand up to the challenging hills, switchbacks and straight-aways of the Test Track circuit? How well does it navigate through bumpy roads, icy conditions, turn-on-a-dime curves and other surprises? Their design skills are put to the test – at speeds of up to 65 mph.
The fun and excitement extends to the post-show area, which continues the story of Chevrolet design:
  • Scoring their design. Guests get to compare their virtual car’s performance results to that of a baseline “SimCar” – and see how they performed against their fellow “designers” and recent top scorers.
  • Guests as freshly-minted car designers can even create their own TV commercial – starring their virtual custom vehicle and adding location, narration and music – and email it to friends and family.
  • At a digital driving table laying out a road course, guests have an opportunity to race their virtual custom-concept vehicles against other guests’ designs, over changing terrains and encountering extreme conditions.
  • In another experience, guests get to pose for photos with actual Chevrolet vehicles.  Also, through green screen technology — with a few taps on their touch screen — guests suddenly find themselves posing with their virtual concept Chevrolet on the lunar surface, a polar landscape, arcing across the galaxies or other thrilling scenes. The images become easily sharable on social media, sending virtual postcard greetings to family, friends or co-workers back home.
  • New and concept Chevrolet vehicles are laid out showroom-style. Guests can get behind the wheel of Chevrolet’s latest production models. Chevrolet product specialists are on hand to answer any questions.
Test Track Presented by Chevrolet continues a 30-year relationship between General Motors and Disney at Epcot dating to the opening of the park Oct. 1, 1982 with World of Motion.
Test Track Presented by Chevrolet is included in Epcot admission.

Is your Travel Agent Biased?

Is Your Travel Agent Biased?

I just read an interesting article encouraging me to be biased. At first you might think this a strange concept. We are trained and taught to believe that being biased is unacceptable and down right rude. But, in the instance of picking the right vacation for your family, a little bias is in order.

I love Walt Disney World. I love the resorts, I love the attention to detail, the Disney Service, the desire to make sure that every day of my vacation is the best day yet. With that, when I am asked why should I pay more to stay "on property", I have to fall back on why I love Disney so much. I usually use the normal canned answer of, free Disney transportation, extra magic hours, package delivery and on and on.

But what I really need to say, is I love Disney. I wouldn't want a vacation just like the one I took when we went to visit Aunt Gladys in Omaha and stayed at the Holiday Inn Express. While there is nothing wrong with Holiday Inn Express or Omaha, I specifically chose Disney World for the magic and enchantment of the entire destination. The resorts on property that Disney owns and operates are as much a part of that experience as the Magic Kingdom and Cinderella's Castle.

Not convinced yet? Disney has 3 categories of Resorts (plus the Home Away from Home resorts) that can meet any budget. Each resort has a unique theme that Disney carries through the entire property. If you choose the new Art of Animation Resort, you will live, if only for a week, in the world of Pixar and their most popular movies; Cars, Finding Nemo and The Lion King. Each building, each hallway, each room is decorated to reflect the world of the movie down to the light switch! Everywhere you look, you will see parts of the movie.

I worked for The Disney Store for 2 years in the mid-nineties. I learned so much more about Disney and the philosophy of Disney Service. There is on stage and off stage. We, the guest, are always on stage so everything we see is part of the "play" and considered in production. Disney and all of their cast members know this and work extremely hard to make sure our part of the production is flawless.

Does that mean we will have a vacation without hiccups? No, I don't think that is even humanly possible! What it means is, if something doesn't go right, Disney will do everything in its power (and its a mighty power!) to make sure they can correct the situation. Even if a simple heart felt "we apologize" with nothing monetarily attached is all you receive, it is 100 times more then what most hospitality companies will do for its guests. Disney truly believes you are their guest, just like when you visit Aunt Gladys in Omaha, you are visiting your cousins in Orlando. No one does it like Disney.

So the next time you are thinking about a trip to Disney, don't be bamboozled by a few dollars off your "hotel" stay. Choose to be enwrapped in Disney Theme, Disney Service and Disney Family and stay "on property".

Character Meet & Greet at the Magic Kingdom

Character Meet & Greet at the Magic Kingdom

Since the closing of Mickey’s Toontown you might be worried about catching those amazing character autographs. Never fear, Disney has it covered! You can always see Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse and the Disney princesses at Town Square in the location currently known as Town Square Exposition Hall. Once inside you can choose from 3 lines (Mickey & Minnie, The Princesses or Pooh & Friends). Once you choose you will wind through the ropes until you enter the room with your chosen characters. Only about 10 families can enter at once so you have a little more time with each character. There is a Disney PhotoPass photographer with each character so you don’t have to worry about having your cameras out. If you have autograph books you will need to have them ready for each character (remember gloved characters need fat pens!).

Once you have seen your characters you can get in line for the other characters in the hall. Other Disney characters will be in the courtyard outside the hall and in different spots throughout the Magic Kingdom, including the new Fantasyland. Opening December 6th, in Princess Fairytale Hall, Aurora, Cinderella and other Disney princesses, such as Tiana and Rapunzel, will greet you in their new home, an elegant royal court on the site where Snow White's Scary Adventures stands today. Already open is Pete's Silly Sideshow character greetings: A place where guests can meet some of their favorite Disney circus stars who wait to show off their special talents. The tent features two options: Join a line that leads to Minnie Magnifique (Minnie Mouse as a circus star) and Madame Daisy Fortuna (Daisy Duck as a fortuneteller), or head to see The Great Goofini (Goofy as a daredevil stunt pilot) and The Astounding Donaldo (Donald Duck as a snake charmer).

Lots of great areas to meet your favorite characters!!! MackeyMouse Travel will send you on vacation with a great list of tidbits like these!! Contact us today so we can help you plan your next Magical Vacation!! mackeymousetravel@yahoo.com or 770.490.5974.

Cars Wing Opens at Art of Animation Resort

Cars Wing Offers High-Octane Fun at Disney’s New Family Suites Resort

Copyright: Disney

Lightning McQueen, Mater, Flo and other characters from the popular Pixar film “Cars” race into Radiator Springs just in time for the summer vacation season as Disney’s Art of Animation Resort opened the second phase of its new family suites property at Walt Disney World Resort June 18. Less than a month ago, Disney’s Art of  Animation Resort opened its first phase of family suites, themed to Finding Nemo.

In the new Cars wing, featuring 480 family suites, a freshly paved road leads guests on the greatest road trip ever, a cruise down memory lane to small town America — Radiator Springs.  Parked at the entryway Sheriff and  the infamous  Doc Hudson welcome folks into town, along with other car “faces” parked along the road.  There’s backdrops of Luigi’s Casa Della Tires, Tow Mater Towing and the Wheel Well Motel, creating an authentic setting lifted from the super-charged adventure.

All roads lead to the 60′s style Cozy Cone Motel where distinctive orange cone-shaped cabanas invite guests to kick back and then take a dip in the Cozy Cone Pool. High-octane theming is full-throttle inside the family suites, with orange cones imprinted in the carpeting and adorning the light fixtures plus animation-inspired artwork. Guests will feel as though they walked into a scene from the blockbuster film as a pull-out bed extends from the living room sofa (whimsically appearing as the back seat of an old hot rod), the tool chest is actually the dresser and the bathroom design is inspired by a car  wash.

Opening in phases, each of four distinctly designed wings of Disney’s Art of Animation Resort celebrates rich storytelling, spirited characters, original sketches and playfulness with colorful icons and whimsical theming inspired by classic Disney and Disney•Pixar films.

Making the Most of Your Time - Tip #1

If “a penny saved is a penny earned,” then what of time?  Shouldn’t it follow that saving time is also merit-worthy? Certainly using time purposefully is important, given that a guest has invested both money and time in a vacation. What is “purposeful” varies from person to person, however. Some guests at Epcot once shared that they were so enamored with the gardens that they hadn’t done any attractions – but they weren’t complaining; rather, they were complimenting … and beaming.  Here are some ways to “make time,” save time, add time and use time during a Disney park visit…

Disney’s FASTPASS System allows guests to avoid waiting at designated popular attractions in all four Walt Disney World theme parks.  Here’s how it works:
  • At the entrance to experiences offering FASTPASS, two times are posted – (1) approximate wait time using the normal queue and (2) return time for FASTPASS tickets currently being issued.
  • If the wait in the normal queue is long, guests can choose to obtain a FASTPASS ticket (at no charge) with an assigned return time (an hour-long window) and then use the time until then to enjoy other experiences in the park.
  • Upon returning to use their FASTPASS, the guest can experience the attraction with little or no waiting.
  • Currently you can obtain a second attraction FASTPASS once the first FASTPASS time starts allowing you to hold two FASTPASSES at a time. Disney is enhancing the system almost daily so this tidbit could be outdated at anytime!
We do our FASTPASSES in teams. Once we gain entry into the park one person (usually one with some speed behind their step) goes to get the entire groups FASTPASS for the first attraction while the rest of the group gets in line for another attraction. Typically we do FASTPASS for Winnie the Pooh or Peter Pan and get in line for Dumbo. This may sound too regimented but we can have all of the Fantasyland rides plus the Haunted Mansion and possibly Buzz Lightyear by 10:00 am! Then we snack and rest and take our time!

Disney is an amazing place with a lot to see and do. It's best to have a plan so you know what you want to try to get done during your trip. Realizing that you may not get to everything BUT there is always next trip!

NOW Let's go PLAN!!

Epcot Internationl Flower & Garden Festival

New Sorcerer Mickey Topiary Conducts Floral Magic at 19th Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival March 7-May 20

Colorful New Gardens, Popular Gardening Workshops and Whimsical Fun in Store

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – A little gardening magic will go a long way when an eight-foot-tall floral Sorcerer Mickey topiary holds court at the entrance to the 19th Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival March 7-May 20 at Walt Disney World Resort.  Standing atop a 12-foot-tall floral mountain cliff and towering above the park’s front-entrance topiary bed, the commanding Sorcerer Mickey will direct a riot of color in the manicured shapes of dancing broomsticks, buckets, mushrooms, hippos, alligators and elephants straight from the classic Disney film, “Fantasia.”
Disney topiary specialists worked to create the striking new design with innovative materials and recycled elements from years past, says festival horticulture manager Eric Darden.  An earlier version of Sorcerer Mickey stood less than five feet tall; a larger frame was built, Darden says, to more accurately reflect the character in the front-entrance Fantasia scene.  The new Fantasia “mountain” grew from a 2003 topiary piece that once held a “Steamboat Willie” Mickey Mouse display.
“The challenge is to use our resources, repurpose them, and keep them fresh every year,” Darden says.  “These are some of our most popular characters from a topiary standpoint, and ‘Fantasia’ was a groundbreaking film for its music and animation techniques.”
The front-entrance floral spectacle will welcome guests to a festival packed with new displays, featured speakers and hands-on fun for all ages.

Don’t Miss!

For 75 festival days, Epcot guests can explore topiaries and gardens, learn planting, style and design techniques and rock to the tunes of popular Flower Power concerts:
  • Bambi’s Butterfly House, three times the size of the festival’s original, will be a-flutter with multiple species of brilliant butterflies.  At Imagination Walkway by Innoventions West.
  • Pixie Hollow Fairy Garden - Fabulous Disney fairy topiaries alight to greet young fans who enter this whimsical garden designed with play structures for children ages 2-5.  At the Test Track Walkway.
  • The HGTV Designers Stage will present HGTV celebrities each Friday through Sunday and nationally recognized garden personalities Monday through Thursday.  At the Festival Center.
  • The Flower Power concert series will welcome back 20th century pop favorites this year when Jose Feliciano, Chubby Checker and The Wildcats, Paul Revere & The Raiders, Davy Jones and seven other bands rock the America Gardens Theatre with their timeless tunes.  Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Performers and appearance dates subject to change.
Petal Power
Thirty million blooms, 240 floating mini-gardens on two ponds, 700 container gardens of flowers, herbs, plants and vegetables, dozens of Disney character topiaries, 30 “flower towers” of impatiens and sweeping beds of floral designs will create a tapestry of brilliant color across the 260-acre Epcot landscape.  It takes more than one full year and 400 Walt Disney World horticulturists to plan and prepare for the 75-day festival.  One of the most interesting challenges is finding just the right plant materials to bring the park’s topiaries to life.
The front-entrance “Fantasia” rock cliff topiary will be carpeted with a “blackish-purple Ajuga,” says Disney plant specialist Heather Will-Browne.  White and blue flowers will represent streams of water tumbling down the rock face, she adds, and the “Fantasia” theme will be carried out with masses of hot pink geraniums, blue delphiniums, white poppies, violet petunias and blue pansies, among others.  Other show-stopping character topiaries:  Lightning McQueen and Mater from “Cars 2″ at the Japan showcase; Buzz, Woody and Lotso the teddy bear from “Toy Story 3;” and the Fab Five – Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Pluto and Goofy — outside the Festival Center.
The horticulture team also will plant new landscape looks outside the Italy and Norway pavilions, Will-Browne says.  In Italy, gardeners will display a mix of containers overflowing with bright flowers and pots of fragrant herbs used in Italian cuisine.  Around Norway, “we’ll do a white show of geraniums, violas, snap dragons, poppies and alyssum,” she says.  A small Norway meadow will feature “a mass of brilliant, wild mixed color.”  Each of the park’s other nine World Showcase countries will feature special festival landscape elements.
More Festival Fun
  • The Festival Center- Guests can shop for festival merchandise, attend demonstrations and get ideas and tips from master gardeners.  In Future World between Universe of Energy and Mission:SPACE.
  • Disney Gardening at Home presentations - Disney horticulturists will share gardening tips and lead guests in a hands-on, take-home activity at the Festival Center.
  • Special Festival Weekend Celebrations - An Art in the Garden celebration of plein air artists is scheduled March 23-25; a Florida Federation of Garden Clubs gathering will be April 27-29; and a Fresh from Florida Farmer’s Market salute is slated for May 4-6.
More information about the 19th annual Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival is available by calling 407/W-DISNEY (934-7639) or by visiting disneyworld.com/flower when festival time approaches.  The festival, including all gardening programs and exhibits, is included in regular Epcot admission.

St. Augustine, Florida

It's almost time for the traditional holiday lights in St. Augustine

POSTCARDS FROM FLORIDA

  • The Casa Monica Hotel is lighted in St. Augustine during Nights of Lights, a holiday tradition.
November 05, 2011|By Jim Abbott, Orlando Sentinel
St. Augustine is lovely at night any time of the year, but the holiday season is always special.
Starting Nov. 19, a tradition returns with the 18th annual edition of St. Augustine's famed Nights of Lights, in which the historic district of the nation's oldest city will be illuminated with more than 3 million tiny white lights. The event earned St. Augustine a 2009 ranking by AAA as one of the 12 best places in the United States and Canada to experience holiday cheer. Last year, Nights of Lights was named one of the Top 100 events in the U.S. by the American Bus Association.

It runs through Jan. 31.
This year's light show will mark the return of the iconic Bridge of Lions into the mix. For the past five years, the bridge has been dark during the festival because of renovations. This year, the bridge and two new parks at each end of the span will be home to thousands of new lights in the display.
Activities on the opening weekend will feature the inaugural St. Augustine Marathon on Nov.19 and 20. Race events include a full marathon, half marathon, 10K, 5K and kids' races. Winners will get to drink from the Grail of Endurance filled with fresh spring water from the world-famous Fountain of Youth. (Uh, I've tasted that Fountain of Youth water, and I'd rather have Gatorade.)
Winter Wonderland returns to the St. Augustine Amphitheatre on Nov. 26, with outdoor ice skating, a giant ice slide, carriage rides and snow each night. There also will be appearances by Santa Claus and adult refreshments (for ages 21 and older) in the Igloo Lounge. It runs daily through Jan. 1, including Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.
On Dec. 10, there's a Sunset/Moonrise Tour that offers a view of Nights of Lights from atop the St. Augustine Lighthouse. The event includes a champagne toast, provided by San Sebastian Winery, hors d'oeuvres and a presentation of lighthouse history. Fee is $25 for non-museum members and $20 for members. Reservations are required. Visit staugustinelighthouse.com or call 904-829-0745.
Check out floridashistoriccoast.com for details on other St. Augustine holiday events.

Disney's PhotoPass - explained

Disney's PhotoPass

A great way to get yourself in the picture and allow yourself to enjoy the trip instead of worrying about getting that perfect shot!   Once you book your family vacation you will receive a packet of information. Within that packet is a card (credit card type) that has Disney's PhotoPass printed on it. Write that number down! Log onto the Disney PhotoPass website and register that card!

A photo pass will document your vacation in a way you can't. Disney's photographers are using state of the art equipment and are in the most amazing photo locations in all of the parks! Hand them your pass and they will shoot away. YOU will actually be in the shot!!

On our last trip I had used the PhotoPass that was sent to me then lost it within a day of our trip! The first day pictures are ALWAYS the best!!  I logged on crossing my fingers that I had registered the card AND I had!!  Photos saved!

Disney also offers a great product to go along with your PhotoPass! You can order a photo CD of ALL of your pictures that their photographers took! A little trick that few people know is, you can PRE-ORDER that CD saving yourself $50 off the cost!!  It's a hard link to find so if you have trouble contact me and I will email it to you!

A great way to help offset the cost of the CD is to go with a group. We were 3 families traveling together so the cost of our CD was cut by 1/3. I have read about people doing the same thing on online groups. I haven't done this and am not sure I would trust it but they are out there! I do have a friend who has done a group CD off of an online group and had no trouble at all!

So as part of your pre-planning with MackeyMouse Travel you need to make sure you add Disney's PhotoPass pre-order CD to your list!

NOW let's go PLAN!
